Augie G. Agassi
(Gopherus agassazii)

We were asked by a veterinarian friend to adopt this four-year-old Sonoran Desert Tortoise when we lived in Arizona. Augie had his own bachelor pad in the side yard. Eventually, he'll grow to 15" across (he's now only about 6" across), weigh between 8-15 pounds, and live 80-100 years. Desert tortoises are an endangered species and it is illegal to touch, harm, capture or otherwise harass wild desert tortoises. (Augie was bred in captivity and it is illegal to release him in the wild.) We returned him to the veterinarian when we moved to North Carolina.

On February 24, 2003, we spotted this prematurely aging Chihuahua/Dachshund mix at the county pound where she was scheduled to be euthanized. Severely emaciated (she only weighed 11 pounds and was too skinny to even be spayed), we had "no choice" but to bring her home. She gained two pounds her first few weeks at Howeyland! Sadly, she only lived four more months. We take great comfort, however, in knowing that those were happy, love-filled months for this little girl and for us.

Bhagavan (aka, Bagger!)

On July 5, 2003, while surfing the website of Pefinder.com. I came across this adorable pup who'd been turned in along with his sister ("Too expensive," said the person who'd had them). We zipped down to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in Tucson and scooped him up and into our hearts.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is but a strand in it.  Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. Chief Seattle, 1852

We're not supposed to be perfect.  We're supposed to be useful. You don't have to know the meaning of life to know that life has a meaning. Leonard Peltier, 1999, from Leavenworth Prison
